El Estacio: lighthouse, gola and the working waterway of La Manga

At El Estacio, La Manga stops feeling like one continuous resort road and becomes a narrow piece of coastal engineering. A navigation channel crosses the sandbar, boats pass between the Mar Menor and Mediterranean, and a concrete lighthouse marks the opening from low ground beside saltmarsh and islands.

Why it matters

A lighthouse was first built here in 1862 on the site of a sixteenth-century watchtower. It was automated in 1929; the present 29.2-metre cylindrical reinforced-concrete tower opened in 1971 after the earlier structure was replaced to meet new requirements. The nearby gola is one of the openings through which lagoon and sea exchange water.

Plan the visit

Use the public viewpoint and harbour edges to read current, breakwaters and the different character of each water body. The lighthouse is active navigation infrastructure, so plan for an exterior view unless an official visit is announced. Keep clear of harbour operations and do not fish or swim where signs prohibit it around the channel.

  • Choose clear, moderate weather; exposed wind can make the viewpoint uncomfortable.
  • Keep children away from unguarded water and working harbour edges.
  • Watch boat movements before crossing any quay access.
  • Pair the lighthouse with nearby salt and encañizada interpretation, not a roadside photo stop alone.
