Whitewashed cave workshops with blue doors in the Cuevas del Rodeo, Rojales

Alicante · Vega Baja

Rojales

Rojales grew beside the River Segura, where water engineering sustained the huerta and cave dwellings became a living craft quarter.

A place in two parts

River below, caves above

The historic centre sits beside the Segura, where a weir, waterwheel, irrigation channels and stone bridge reveal how the surrounding huerta was watered.

South of the river, paths climb through the Cuevas del Rodeo. Homes cut into the hillside between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries now hold workshops, exhibitions and an ecomuseum.

A useful starting point

Plan the two stories together

Begin by the river

The hydraulic works are close to the centre and make the geography of Rojales easier to understand.

Climb to the caves

Uneven paths and steps lead through the cave quarter, so comfortable shoes are a sensible choice.
